Homemade Window Cleaner Recipes that Really Work
Window cleaner is a household chore that many people dread. It can be difficult and time consuming to get the streaks and spots off the windows, and it often feels like you’re not getting the job done right no matter what you do. But with a few simple ingredients and some know-how, you can make your own window cleaner that really works!
Here are three recipes for a homemade window cleaner that really works!
Homemade Window Cleaner #1
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 cup white vinegar (distilled)
- 1 tsp. liquid dish soap (like Dawn)
Mix ingredients together in a spray bottle and shake well to combine. Use newspaper to dry the glass, which will prevent streaks from forming. Just spray the homemade window cleaner onto your windows and wipe with the newspaper for sparkling results! What makes this recipe work is the combination of vinegar and soap. The vinegar cuts grease while also preventing streaks, while the soap lifts dirt away from glass surfaces so it can be wiped clean quickly and easily.
If you don’t have newspaper hanging around your house or if you are trying to save trees by using old newspaper, try using a squeegee to dry the window. Just spray the window with your window cleaner and pass over it with a squeegee to avoid streaks.
Homemade Window Cleaner #2
- 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol (70% concentration)
- 1 tsp. liquid dish soap (like Dawn)
Mix ingredients together in a spray bottle and shake well to combine. Use newspaper or a squeegee to dry the glass. The rubbing alcohol is excellent at cutting grease without leaving streaks on your windows. In fact, newsprint has been used for years as a way of cleaning windows because of its grease-cutting properties.
Once you’re done with your windows, there’s no need to rinse and dry them unless they were very dirty. Otherwise, just leave the cleaner on the surface of the glass and it will continue to work. When you want to wipe it off, use a squeegee or some newspapers again for streak-free results!
Homemade Window Cleaner #3
- 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar (Don’t use regular vinegar as it has added dyes and chemicals that can cloud the window.)
- 2 cups filtered or distilled water
Mix ingredients together in a spray bottle and shake well to combine. Use newspaper or a squeegee again to dry the glass. The vinegar through dirt and grime away from your windows, and the water helps it dry up for streak-free cleaning.
Again, if your windows were very dirty or smudgy then you should rinse and dry them after spraying with vinegar to avoid any streaking. If not, just leave the cleaner on and use a squeegee or newspaper again when you’re done for totally professional results!
